ABOUT SCORTON

Scorton is a small village near the River Wyre, in the Wyre
district of Lancashire, England, located north of Garstang.

Priory

Tea Room

Scorton is particularly fortunate in its location, being only a short way from the A6 and yet on the edge of the Forest of Bowland which is a designated “Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty”.

In the 19th Century there was a cotton mill in the village and also a railway station on the West Coast Main Line from 1841 until 1939. Although the village has three churches, there is only one pub in the village, Stouts Bar, part of The Priory at Scorton.

Scorton means “farmstead near a ditch or ravine”. Although it bears an Anglo-Saxon name, the village is not a particularly old place and does not feature in the Doomsday Book. The earliest reference to the village goes back to 1587, with most of the development taking place during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In the nineteenth century Scorton earned the name “metropolis” because it stood on the London, Midland and Scottish Railway main line to the north. Long before the railway, mail coaches called on their way from London to Scotland.
